Cobra Starship has been on a four-year musical mission to get hipsters to stop taking themselves so seriously and start dancing. Their latest effort, the video for “You Make Me Feel…” off their forthcoming album, follows much in the same vein as their Hot Mess hits. Filmed in a NYC Meatpacking District club, it loosely focuses on front man Gabe Saporta’s quest to find his missing half by way of a magical, mood-detecting photo booth. There are a few blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameos, including a bearded Robin Williams, but the goal of the song is mostly to P-A-R-T-Y.
We stopped by the shoot a few weeks ago in time to catch some of the final setup and chat with Saporta, who was bouncing around the greenroom, slapping high fives, poking fun at napping crew members, and fixing his own hair and makeup.
“The best part of filming a video is that you get to be king for a day. I mean, did you see the craft services?” Saporta told Out. (The cookies we munched on were delicious while we watched the group ham it up for the party scenes.) If Cobra Starship is looking for another night-out hit like “Good Girls Go Bad,” they may have found it.

We find ourselves lucky if we get to work with just one model who’s as lively off-camera as she is in front of the camera. But to have a great model and super fun band Cobra Starship in one shoot? Oh, we’re just spoiled silly! Find out what went on behind-the-scenes of SELF’s July fashion shoot featuring Cobra Starship after the jump!
Fashion Director Evyan Metzner worked with each band member individually to create some fun summer outfits to complement model Mila de Wit’s summer party looks. And after spending some QT with the super high-energy group, here are some style secrets we gathered from each member.
Gabe Saporta has mastered the art of…cuffing pants! We were fascinated with the TLC the lead singer gave the hems of the black Uniqlo jeans he wore throughout the shoot.
Billboard wrote on a You Make Me Feel Video Review that the new Album will be out till August 30!
The Kai Regan-directed clip finds the synth-pop group lounging around a club and taking breaks from sipping neon-colored drinks to visit a photo booth that has the word “Feeling…” written on the outside. The various club personalities proceed to fill in the ellipsis through a series of snapshots that show people acting “Jersey,” “Spunky,” “Niiiice,” and “Munchy,” among other things.
“Feel…” precedes Cobra Starship’s fourth studio album, “Night Shades,” which is due out Aug. 30 on Decaydance/Fueled By Ramen. The group’s last album, “Hot Mess,” sold 139,000 copies upon its 2009 release, thanks in part to the hit single “Good Girls Go Bad,” which has sold 2 million downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Gabes Girlfriend Erin Fetherston told Kristin Studeman from style.com something really cute about how she spends her ‘holidays’:
“Lately, I have really been obsessed with playing Scrabble. It sounds so nerdy, but my boyfriend and I play Scrabble at sunset on my rooftop and have cocktails. I would say that’s a very indulgent summer evening.”
