Kara DioGuardi about writing Good Girls Go Bad with Cobra Starship

“There are so many times when I walk in a room, and I don’t even know the artist I’m writing with,” DioGuardi said. “When I wrote ‘Good Girls Go Bad’ with Cobra Starship, it was like 11 o’clock in the morning on a results show day for ‘Idol,’ I had totally never met this cat in my life, and I had, like, two hours to do it. So we pulled up some tracks and said, ‘Hey, what’s your name?’ and we literally wrote most of that song in two hours. … To me it’s like a date. Either it’s going to be great from the get-go, or after one drink you’re going to have your best friend call and pretend there is an emergency.”

Cobra Starship Video Shoot!

Gabe Saporta poses with his Cobra Starship bandmates Alex Suarez and Nate Novarro on the set of an MTV video shoot on Monday (May 23) in New York City.
The shoot must have went well because later that night, Gabe tweeted “i need to go to sleep so we can rehearse tomorrow. but i’m too wired from our insane video shoot today.”
Later in the week, the 31-year-old singer tweeted some wisdom.
“If you don’t have 2 or more people in your head arguing at all times, you’re probably not connecting to your true self,” Gabe said.

Cobra Starship Say Clubby ‘You Make Me Feel’ Is ‘Easier To Digest’

With first song from upcoming Night Shades album, band aims for a hotspot gig in Ibiza.

When Cobra Starship returned earlier this month with “You Make Me Feel …,” a walloping slab of club thump, starry synths and blurry, whirry vocal tics, some fans were left scratching their heads. This most certainly wasn’t the band they had grown to love … in fact, the song recalls nothing as much as it does “Good Girls Go Bad,” Cobra’s biggest, clubbiest hit to date.

Though, for frontman Gabe Saporta, those complaints are nothing new. In fact, he’s been hearing them ever since he launched the Starship way back in 2006.

“Every record we’ve put out, from the first Cobra record, with people complaining about Midtown, to the second, when it became a band, from the second to the third, there’s always people who say, ‘Oh, it doesn’t sound like the old Cobra,’ ” Saporta told MTV News on Monday on the set of the “Feel …” video in New York. “And the biggest thing I can say is, if you listen to our whole record … [the songs are] so varied. And on top of that, I hate to quote our old songs, but, ‘We really just came here to make you dance tonight, we don’t care if you’re a guilty pleasure.’ ”

Indeed. And while some fans may be puzzled by the club-friendly sound of “Feel …,” well, Cobra want you to know that there’s plenty else to love on the upcoming Night Shades album … provided they finish it, of course.

“I think [this song is] a little easier to digest for the fans of ours that only knew ‘Good Girls …,’ whereas on the record, there’s quite a bit more variety, and I don’t think there’s necessarily much else that sounds like this one,” guitarist Ryland Blackinton said. “Of course, we’re still working on it.”

And so, with Shades due this summer (“We didn’t specify which year,” bassist Alex Suarez laughed), Cobra are buckling down to put the finishing touches on the project … after they finish shooting the “Feel …” video, of course. And in keeping with the song’s theme, the clip is a very clubby, carefree affair, featuring a cameo by up-and-coming singer Sabi. And all of those things should go a long way toward helping them fulfill a lifelong goal: a summer in sunny, sultry Ibiza.

“One of our goals in making this record is that we wanted to do a residency in Ibiza, and we’ve never been there, so hopefully this will help us segue to that part of our career,” Saporta said.

“I’ve also never had a tan, so that would be cool,” Blackinton laughed.

Making the Video

It’s 8pm on a Monday night and we’ve gone underground – literally. We’re holed up with Cobra Starship inside The Bunker, a rave cave on Hudson Street. It’s usually a place where girls gossip in tight designer clumps, and the DJs have obscure stickers from French skateboard brands on their laptops. Tonight, it’s a little different, because Cobra Starship’s taken over. The goofball dance band is filming their new video for “You Make Me Feel,” and it’s about kids going to a party and discovering an old-school photo booth.

The boppy song blares in bits as the director crams carefully messed-up girls into hallways, bathroom stalls, and booths. The performance art duo Andrew / Andrew perches next to a champagne bucket. “I can’t tell them apart,” whispers a guy on the crew. “That’s the point,” a publicist snaps back. (Other people who film cameos: Sabi, the singer who’s featured on the track; fashion guru Joe Zee; model Laura O’Neal, and Robin Williams, who’s come to hang out with this daughter Zelda, a featured extra in an orange Judy Jetson dress.)

“We called all our friends and told them to come be in the video, like, lots of different kinds of people – that was important,” says front man Gabe Saporta, who sports a Shipley & Halmos varsity jacket. “We don’t generally hang out at clubs and take over an entire couch like this,” adds guitarist Ryland Blackinton, “But it’s pretty fun to get everyone we like in one place. And they got us tons of food.” (The veggie burgers are a big favorite.)

The director calls places and Blackinton stops for a moment, pointing at his red sneakers. “Check it out,” he says, “I have red sneakers and red jeans. And red socks, but I only wear red socks, so…”

“See you later,” says Gabe, pulling his band mate onto the set. “We have to go pretend to be at a party now.”
